Got snowed in over the Christmas weekend, so what else better to do than revive an old amplifier project, from a couple years ago. This was originally a prototype for a 6B4G single ended triode amp, which later got translated to 12X10X2 inch steel chassis, so I had the blue anodized plate and the transformers left over. Load up a new PC board, wnd wire up the outputs for a couple of 6AV5GAs, which are "dirt cheap" TV horizontal sweep tubes. The little known "secret" is that these tubes can and actually do sound very good. The wood base is also from the prototype stages, a bit crude but it does the job of keeping it off the bench or table top. This unit is serving as a "test bed" for a new design, using similar tubes, but with a somewhat different design - stay tuned... |
