Here is the last pic of the Fairbanks Morse motor & pump. This view shows the pipe that sucked up water from the Paria river, before many years of flash floods obliterated the hand-dug settling pool where the pipe sucked water. According to one history book, they dug a little settling pool to allow the muddy Paria water to settle out, before getting sucked into the pump. I imagine finely ground sand is pretty unforgiving on equipment.
