The Milwaukee Road was famous in the earlier days for staging locomotive 'tug-of-wars' between the electric and steam engines as a publicity event. Here is one I have never seen before, courtesy davesrailpix.com. Usually the electrics won these events due to the sheer tractive effort of them. In this case it's up against 2 steam locomotives! I have heard that generally they had to replace rails where these events took place since the spinning wheels finally made the rails useless from the melted steel...wow!
