EIV 14 inch green glass fog style suspension with an uncommonly large 2 inch dia ball. ( A smaller version of this suspension [id=276498850] ). I welcome any comments on this suspension. I am also curious to know if there are any other suspensions, glass or porcelain with this size hardware.

EIV is short for Europeenne d'lsolateurs en Verre" (European Glass insulators). This trademark is found on some of Sediver manufactured insulators, and according to GIFONA 2nd Revision this trademark was dropped in 1988.

I asked a few knowledgeable collectors about this disc. The general consensus is that you would expect to find it where a very long span was necessary. Between mountains where a gorge was too deep or steep to access .. This style is used in fog prone areas so over wide rivers near an ocean was suggested. This style, or a very similar style is sold by some companies for DC systems found overseas which use large diameter wires is another possibility.

'The higher the voltage, the bigger the insulation or bigger insulators. Second, high altitude is one, the higher you go the bigger the insulators needed. Humidity in the air by the coast causes problems and dictates the need for bigger insulators to stop flash over's. The span distance, wind condition, temperature, and wire size all require different stuff.. the DC used overseas in places does require some huge wire sizes to maintain the current carrying ability. So big wire, big dead-end insulators. '

I have not found any company that offers something of this calibre on their website. I have found several companies that provide a ' will make to your specification ' option.

My own uneducated thought was that a single string of these could be used in situations where multiple strings of lesser discs of a similar style that EIV produces would have been necessary.
