Here we have some early Arizona history from the late 1870's that was found on the Military Telegraph line that ran between the soldier's forts during the Indian war with Geronimo. All three pieces were found lying on the ground. Two of the pieces are heavily etched and appear to have been in a sever sand storm. The smallest chunk is embossed CAUV PATD JULY 25 1865. The ET is missing. The second frosted piece displays intact if rotated just right and is fully embossed with W BROOKFIELD / 55 FULTON ST / NY in the front and CAUVET / PATD / JULY 25 1865 on the back. The third piece is an excellent example that still has a portion of the original line in which I cut it from. This piece is embossed with the 55 Fulton address and has the three patent dates from 1865, 1870, and 1870. The top has been frost popped off and the loggers must have snagged and dragged this a ways because I could never find the top piece. This piece also has a frayed portion of the iron wire that was inferior at the time and when it broke it would separate in several strains. This was a common problem that existed during the maintenance of these lines. I |
