Northampton is a small city in western MA in the Berkshire hills, not too far from the intersection of MA, NY and VT. This is a photo of a small post office within a general store in 1937. I am not sure if it is still there. There still are a few of these Ma & Pa USPS offices around here in Massachusetts, albeit with their own zip codes. Of note is Elmwood, MA (zip 02337). This PO has a corner within a general store/antique shop within a 200+ year old building. Elmwood's is rather similar to the above pictured. Old fashioned and left original with the best of upkeep, 02337 probably hasn't changed much in the last century. It is six miles down the road from me and in East Bridgewater, MA. Elmwood is a rather small section of the forementioned small town. Back to Northampton....despite the vast modernization and USPS budget cuts, some old-school post offices still remain here in MA and surrounding states. They can raise their rates all they want (as far as I'm concerned) ... only if it means preserving post office counters like this one. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ |
