The Keystone Arches Bridge Trail is located in Western Massachusetts where the towns of Middlefield, Chester and Beckett join eachother. The trail follows the east-west rail line between Worchester Mass. and East Greenbush N.Y. These bridges were built in the late 1830's and are all constructed of granite blocks and were hand fit without the use of concrete or any joining material. The line is still active, although several of the original bridges are no longer in use-the rail line was straightened and the Westfield River was redirected at some time in the more recent past. One of the bridges was destroyed in a flood some years ago and is obviously one of those no longer used!! My wife and I hiked the trail in the fall, but I forgot to take the camera, so when we went back yesterday with our snowshoes and with our friends, the camera came along!! Here are a group of shots of the bridges. There is much foliage that obscures some of the pictures, but I hope you can appreciate the beauty and ruggedness of the terrain. This third picture is the second bridge. It's a bit hard to see because of the trees and distance of the photo, but you get the idea of the icy river that runs underneath. .
