This is one of three Shay Locomotives owned by Northern Pacific Railroad that was gear driven. The history says (very little known) that they were used on logging roads and short lines. They apaarently were slow but had a lot of pull. Northern Pacific owned three of them. This is from Ron Nixons NP Locomotives, and has a lot of other NP Locomotive pictures.
