This last summer we received this little 4 wheeled trolley car from the Oporto, Portugal tramways as a donation. All that we had to pay was $ for shipping! (yes, it came over on a real ship)! This style was developed in 1909 by J.G. Brill Co. of Philadelphia. In those days they built these for world wide use and they were in use in Portugal. From then on the Portugal Tramway shops began building their own clever copies of the original! This is a later one built in 1940. A little worse for wear but we will fix that, and much more. We were surprised that after we inspected and lubed it and put up the pole to the power wire...it ran great! It is a big hit and fun to operate. Truly a "toonerville trolley" like the streetcar in the cartoons long ago. At the Oregon Electric Railway Museum, Brooks, Oregon |
