Until the tourist excursion trains stopped running in the early 1990s, the Fisher Bridge over the Lamoille River was the last remaining covered RR bridge in America in active use. It is easily accessable from Rte. 15 in north central Vermont near the town of Wolcott. It was built by the St. Johnsbury and Lamoille County RR in 1908. The right of way is famous for its grade efficient but mileage innefficient route, which snaked like the Mississippi River in horseshoe curve after horseshoe curve between St. Johnsbury and St. Albans. The bridge fell itnto disrepair and was slated for demolition but a consortium of citizens and the State of Vermont designated it a historic landmark and then restored it. A steel under truss was built to carry the full RR load. Because of extensive erosion due to spring flooding in the early 90s, the Lamoille Valley ceased operating and formally petitioned for abandonment in the mid 90s. There are talks of turning the right of way into a bike trail. Visit http://www.coveredbridgesite.com/vt/fisher.html for more pictures and more information.
