| Perhaps the single most important mechanism by which the "Northwest Territory" (Alberta and Saskatchewan) was settled would be the Canadian Pacific Railway. There were, however, two earlier efforts responsible for bringing settlers to the vast uninhabited area. One was the Northwest Mounted Police, the other was the Dominion Telegraph.
