This insulator was acquired as a utility yard find. It belongs to Joe Maurath, Jr. and is the result of a "dumpster dive" while he was working at the Hingham (MA) Municipal Light Plant in the late 1980s. The dumpster was in clear view of the company's windows and Joe wonders to this day if any of the management happened to partake in looking at Joe's calculated maneuvering! The insulator was a hard reach on the bottom! At the time the utility was converting their old 4,160 volt primary distribution lines to 13,800 volts and during that time a good number of old insulators were taken out of service. Most were porcelain. Of the glass examples, only one N.E.G.M. sapphire blue was discovered.
