Been asked to show the differences between the large and small mold Hemi No.8's, particularly the blot-outs. Capturing these blots with a camera has proven difficult. They are fairly subtle and have been re-engraved over the top with the emb'g you see. This photo shows a large mold (with blots), PG [020], on the left with a small mold (no blots) PG [010] on the right. The small mold units I have are rather rough/sharp edged, some having clearly visible "chatter" marks from the original machining of the ductile iron mold. None show repair marks, whereas the large mold units all show filing marks on the lower skirts near the mold lines. I am suspicious that the earliest units were the small molds that were later reworked/rebored, producing a larger insulator of near identical profile (?) Note the difference in emb'g size!
